Engaged
An engaged learner looks different in every school, however, what we know from research indicates that if our students are engaged then we will see improvements in their learning. According to the What Works Best 2020 Update document, increased engagement in learning is linked to 7 of the 8 themes considered as effective strategies for high performing schools, inclusive of: high expectations, explicit teaching, effective feedback, use of data to inform practice, high quality assessment, classroom management and wellbeing. These are all areas of focus for our teaching staff and a large part of our four year school plan.
In education, student engagement refers to the degree of attention, curiosity, interest, optimism, and passion that students show when they are learning or being taught, which extends to the level of motivation they have to learn and progress in their education. Our engaged learners at Bingara Central School will thrive on being interested, inspired and inquisitive.
As a part of the BCS GRIT model we ask our students to demonstrate four areas on their journey to becoming engaged learners.
· I can stay focused on my learning.
· I can make good choices about my learning.
· I am excited to learn.
· I can learn independently and as part of a group.
These ‘I’ statements encourage students to think about what a focused learner looks like, sounds like and feels like and identify good choices in relation to their learning, gaining an understanding as to what excites them about their own personal learning achievements.
We believe that all students need to be challenged and engaged in order to develop their full potential.
Learning is not attained by chance, it must be sought for with ardour and attended to with diligence.
