Remembrance, Reflection and Learning
A Living Memorial - Remembering the Fallen
This Living Memorial Garden has been created as a place of reflection, remembrance and learning for the students, staff and wider community of Bingara Central School.
Designed as a peaceful space to pause and reflect, the garden serves as a living memorial to those who have served and sacrificed for our nation. The garden also complements the orange trees that line the streets of Bingara, strengthening the connection between our school and the local community.
As part of this project, students explored the significance of remembrance through research, creative writing and artwork, helping to tell the stories of service, sacrifice and community.
Garden Opening
On Friday 3 July 2026, Bingara Central School proudly unveiled its Living Memorial Garden, a dedicated space for remembrance, reflection and learning.
Made possible through funding from the NSW Government Veterans Community Grant in partnership with the Bingara Central School P&C Association, the garden provides students, staff and visitors with a peaceful place to pause, reflect and honour the service and sacrifice of Australian servicemen and women.
Year 3 – Charcoal Soldier Silhouettes
Year 3 students explored the theme of remembrance through art by creating striking charcoal soldier silhouettes. Each student selected a background colour before tracing the outline of a soldier of their choice. They then carefully used charcoal techniques to create the silhouette and shadow effect, learning how light, contrast and shading can be used to produce dramatic visual impact. The finished artworks provided students with an opportunity to reflect on the service and sacrifice of our ANZACs while developing their artistic skills and creativity.
Kindergarten – ANZAC Biscuits
Kindergarten students had a wonderful time learning about the ANZAC spirit through a hands-on cooking experience. After reading Anzac Biscuits by Phil Cummings and Owen Swan, students explored the significance of ANZAC Day and the tradition of baking ANZAC biscuits. With the help of Mrs Hall, they carefully followed a recipe, measuring ingredients, mixing the batter and following each step of the method to create a delicious batch of biscuits. The activity provided opportunities to practise listening, sequencing and teamwork while learning about the values of courage, kindness and mateship that the ANZAC spirit represents. Best of all, the students enjoyed sharing their freshly baked biscuits with one another.
Year 2 – ANZAC Acrostic Poems
As part of their learning about ANZAC Day and remembrance, Year 2 students explored the meaning of ANZAC through class discussions and guided research. Students developed a deeper understanding of the values of courage, sacrifice, mateship and service before creating their own ANZAC acrostic poems. They then utilised their typing skills to carefully type their poems, practising digital literacy and presentation skills, before printing and gluing them onto their artwork. This activity combined English, History and Technology, allowing students to express their understanding of ANZAC in a thoughtful and creative way while developing valuable computer skills.
Stage 6 English – Creative Writing
As part of their study of remembrance and reflection, Stage 6 English students took their learning outdoors for a creative writing activity inspired by the Living Memorial Garden. Sitting beneath the orange trees at the front of the school, students responded to the prompt, "The smell of oranges reminds me of…" Drawing on their own childhood memories, emotions and personal experiences, they crafted imaginative and reflective pieces that explored the powerful connection between scent and memory. This activity encouraged students to appreciate how sensory language can evoke emotion while fostering meaningful links between the school's memorial space, the iconic orange trees of Bingara, and the importance of remembering the stories and experiences that shape us.
